Why Are You Doing This?

'Why Are You Doing This?' is an exploration of a path through a specific local nature reserve on Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Country in so called Victoria, Australia, This video asks the audience and artist themselves why they are creating work, why they might walk this (or other) paths, what their impact is on the environments and ecologies around them, and how what they hear and/or experience might impact their emotional state and subsequently alter the way they might impact the world around them. 'Why Are You Doing This?' considers the literal and figurative paths we may take throughout our environments and lifetimes - questioning our place among them.

J A Pinney produces art works exploring heightened experiences through an immersive ecological public arts practice. Pinney is interested in art that highlights environments and encourages close attention to the way specific locations sound, whilst also considering the ecological, cultural, historical, and emotional importance of such sounds and landscapes.

Pinney has an MA in sound art from the London College of Communication, has exhibited and performed work both nationally and internationally, and is undertaking a PhD candidature at RMIT’s School of Art. There, Pinney is researching the sounds and worlds of human and non-human animals, and whether it is possible to extend human perception and sensory abilities.
